Progress in the fight against malaria?
Progress in the fight against malaria?
Scientists at the University of Edinburgh working in cooperation with the Biotec Institute in Bangkok have decoded the structure of the protein that makes the malaria parasite resistant to medicines. Researchers had long seen the protein molecule called DHFR as the cause of the development of resistance, but were unable to analyse it in detail. Professor Malcolm Walkinshaw, of Edinburgh University, says that now that has been achieved a new generation of medicines to combat resistant malaria strains can be developed.
How urgently such medicines are needed is made clear by a report by the World Health Organisation and UNICEF on malaria in Africa (Africa Malaria Report) published at the end of April. The report says more than 3,000 African children per day die of the disease. This figure could be reduced by at least 25 per cent solely by increasing the proportion of children who sleep under impregnated mosquito nets, as in a project in Tanzania, from 10 per cent to 50 per cent. To say nothing of improving access to new and more effective medicines.
