The state of the world

The state of the world is summed up by the annual report of the Worldwatch Institute in Washington DC – for 20 years one of the most important references on sustainability issues. The 2003 report takes up fundamental questions of safeguarding the future: global warming, loss of biodiversity, poverty. The individual articles – such as on development strategies for megacities and the role of religions in solving environmental problems – provide an overview of the current state of research and describe approaches for sustainable development. The publishers of the German edition, Germanwatch and the Heinrich Böll Foundation, contribute a portrayal of the ongoing debate on agricultural trade and an afterthought on the World Summit in Johannesburg.
