An oil pipeline

An oil pipeline

An oil pipeline in Ecuador which the Westdeutsche Landesbank (West LB) is co-financing is polluting the environment even before its commissioning. Robert Goodland, a former World Bank environmental expert, said this on March 26 at a hearing of the One World Committee in the North Rhine-Westphalia State Parliament. Goodland presented an action plan which includes measures against human rights violations related to the project, a change of the pipeline route, and the appointment of an independent commission of experts to monitor the project. He also called on the West LB to integrate ecological and social standards in its business practices. Goodland drew attention to the disastrous impacts of the pipeline in an expert opinion in the autumn of 2002. (uke)
