World population grows slower

The world population is growing more slowly than previously thought. In its latest forecast, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) anticipates a global increase by 2050 to 8.9 billion people, which is 400 million lower than its last estimate. Nevertheless, regional differences in population growth are becoming more marked. According to the German Foundation for World Population (DSW), the populations of the worldÕs poorest countries will be growing at a rate of 1.2 percent a year by 2050, which is nearly four times faster than the world population as a whole.
